the mauser does a bit less damage but fires quicker. so if you're play preference is faster fire the gun is a good choice to run with. if you prefer weapons that do more damage but fire slower then pistols like the volcanic or lemat will be more your style; with cattleman's, schofield, etc, being in the middle.

Even though i keep my guns clean it never goes back up and it doesn't seem like you can fully repair it anywhere either I'm pretty sure that's the maximum possible the guns particular stat can be. Or it's comparing it to the last weapon you just used.
