I bought a 1.8 20VT Leon from '05 with 146.000 miles on it. These are cars that can get up to 220.000 miles easily if maintained well. If there is documentation about it's service history and the car has been kept well the first gen is a really good car. No engines are particularly inefficient – even the Cupra models – but the 1.6-litre TDI is the model to go for if you want to keep running costs down.
